OpenAI Rolls Out Two Open-Weight AI Reasoning Models
OpenAI has released two open-weight AI reasoning models that match the capabilities of its o-series models. These models are freely downloadable via the Hugging Face developer hub.
They come in two variants: the high-capacity gpt-oss-120b model that can be deployed on a single Nvidia GPU, and the lightweight gpt-oss-20b suitable for laptops with 16 GB of memory.
OpenAI explains that its open models can forward complex questions to cloud-based AI systems. This means that if the open model cannot perform a particular operation, such as image recognition, it can integrate with OpenAI’s more advanced closed models.
The models were trained using similar methods as the company’s private models and employ mixture-of-experts (MoE) to optimize parameter usage.
