Meta was Sued by a Company with the Same Name
The owner of Facebook received a subpoena from a small startup called Meta, which is engaged in virtual art installations.
Changing the Facebook name to Meta was actively discussed in the fall of 2021. Such a move was explained by the fact that the company is expanding the horizons of its strategy and intends to explore and master all the possibilities of the metaverse. The chosen name and logo has been repeatedly criticized, but now Mark Zuckerberg's company will have to stand trial, defending its choice.
Meta was sued in the New York branch of federal court. It turned out that the company that has been developing virtual art installations and has been on the market since 2010 also bears the Meta name. According to a court filing, a small startup considers itself an injured party and is asking the judiciary to protect the brand from trademark infringement.
In a post on its website, the suer says it has been trying to negotiate with the former Facebook for about eight months since the big company was renamed. However, all attempts to peacefully resolve the issue were unsuccessful and the company was forced to go to court. It is also emphasized that buyers and customers often reject the services of a small company, as they confuse it with the Zuckerberg`s brand, which does not have the best reputation.
