GPT-4.5: AI’s Next Evolutionary Step

OpenAI has officially introduced GPT-4.5 Orion. This is its latest AI model, boasting enhanced computational power and an extensive training dataset. Starting this week, ChatGPT Pro users can access GPT-4.5 as part of a research preview. ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers are expected to receive access next week.

However, operational costs are exceptionally high. OpenAI charges $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens — substantially more than GPT-4o, which costs $2.50 and $10, respectively. OpenAI is currently evaluating whether to continue long-term API support for GPT-4.5.

GPT-4.5 utilizes traditional scaling techniques, significantly increasing computational power and training data. This approach has historically led to major performance jumps in AI capabilities, particularly in writing, coding, and mathematics. Despite this, benchmarks indicate diminishing returns. Newer reasoning models, such as those from DeepSeek and Anthropic, outperform GPT-4.5 in complex problem-solving. On OpenAI’s SimpleQA benchmark, GPT-4.5 surpasses GPT-4o in factual accuracy, but falls short in certain coding and academic assessments.

OpenAI acknowledges the scaling limits of traditional AI models. Industry experts suggest that pre-training-based improvements are reaching their peak, pushing companies towards reasoning-based AI. Therefore, OpenAI plans to merge GPT models with its "o" reasoning series, starting with GPT-5 later this year.

Certainly, GPT-4.5 is not the ultimate breakthrough in AI. Nevertheless, OpenAI sees it as an important milestone that paves the way for more powerful and intelligent AI systems in the near future.
