Anthropic has rolled out a research preview of Claude for Chrome, its new browser-based AI agent, giving selected Max plan subscribers early access. The subscription ranges from $100 to $200 per month, and a waitlist is available for additional users. Using a Chrome extension, Claude runs in a sidecar window, keeps track of browsing context, and can perform selected tasks on the user’s behalf.

The move signals Anthropic’s entry into the rapidly evolving AI browser space. Competitors like Perplexity with Comet, OpenAI, and Google are also integrating AI agents to streamline user interactions. The race is further fueled by Google’s looming antitrust case, which could force a sale of Chrome, drawing attention from major AI players.

Anthropic prioritizes safety, noting risks such as prompt-injection attacks, where hidden website code could cause the agent to carry out malicious actions. The company’s protective measures have reduced the success rate of these attacks from 23.6% down to 11.2%. Claude is blocked from high-risk sites by default, and users must approve sensitive actions, including publishing or sharing personal data.
