Anthropic Launches Cowork AI Agent

Anthropic has introduced Cowork, a new agentic AI tool built into the Claude Desktop app, offering an accessible alternative to Claude Code. Cowork allows users to assign a specific folder for Claude to read, modify, or create files, using the familiar chat interface for instructions. Currently in research preview, Cowork is available to Claude Max subscribers, with a waitlist for other plans. Future updates are expected to expand cross-device support, add new skills, and further improve security.

The tool draws on the Claude Agent SDK, providing the same capabilities as Claude Code but in a more user-friendly form. Users can manage folder access and utilize initial skills for documents, presentations, and browser-based tasks. Typical applications include compiling reports, organizing files, analyzing data, or managing media. Unlike Claude Code, Cowork eliminates the need for command-line skills or virtual environments, making agentic AI workflows approachable for non-technical users.

Cowork operates autonomously, planning and completing tasks with minimal input. Anthropic warns that vague or contradictory instructions could lead to errors, including data loss or prompt injection risks, urging users to provide clear guidance.
