Mozilla Buys Fakespot to Detect Fake Reviews
Mozilla officially announced the purchase of the startup Fakespot. Its products are a website and a browser extension for identifying fake or untruthful reviews. They can be used to detect fake reviews across multiple platforms, such as the TripAdvisor travel planner, Amazon e-commerce service, and others. The amount and other conditions of the sale and purchase transaction are kept secret.
The American company Fakespot was founded in 2016 by Saoud Khalifah. In the process of developing their products, its specialists used the capabilities of AI and ML. They helped uncover a number of patterns of similarities in reviews left on websites, highlighting those that are most likely to be false. Fakespot evaluates or ranks product reviews to help the customer make a more informed buying decision. The main goal of the site and the browser plugin with the detector function is to provide each user with the opportunity to immediately see where fake reviews increase the rating of a particular product.
Mozilla said that with Fakespot, all users of the Firefox web browser will have access to a valuable shopping tool. It will make their e-commerce experience much more comfortable and better. By the way, its implementation in Firefox should happen very soon.
