Twitter has introduced a long-awaited new feature to users subscribed to the premium version of the microblogging service - editing tweets.

The new post editing feature is being tested today and will soon be available to subscribers of the premium version of Twitter Blue, which costs them $4.99 per month. Twitter Blue subscription is now open to Canadians, Americans, New Zealanders and Australians, but only one country will be testing the new feature.

Twitter representatives warned their users on the official page of the social network: “If you see a corrected tweet, we are testing an edit button. It happened, everything will be fine.”

Each tweet can only be edited a few times. This is given only 30 minutes after its first publication. Once this time has elapsed, no further corrections can be made. The edited post will be tagged with an icon, timestamped, and given a link to the edit history. According to Twitter representatives, this is done to improve the quality of communication, while maintaining honesty and reducing stress when using the social network.

Background: The need for a tweet editing feature has been discussed for several years. Some have expressed fear that it will be abused to make changes to the published text after it is retweeted. Back in 2020, Twitter co-founder and ex-CEO Jack Dorsey said that the social network might never allow editing. But in April 2022, Elon Musk, who was then about to acquire the company, posted a poll on Twitter about this topic. According to its results, it turned out that 73.6% of the 4.4 million respondents would like to use such a function.
